My years as a junior editorial doofus (typing Updike, getting scolded by DFW) were crucial. But would pretending they didn't happen on my resume help me get a job?
Nice of you to read, Chris. It was really just a trial balloon of a post. I am not yet engaged, and the piece is just meh but whatever. No, deleting the 90s didn't really help get me a job.
This is great and makes me half-want to do the opposite -- to lard the ancient part of my resume with the parts that were truly awful about those jobs because from what I can tell nobody ever reads that far down on it anyway, not even me.
Hey! Thanks James. i needed that. I think I wouldn’t even be on Substack if it weren’t for Blackbird. Glad to see you’re still having fun. Are there more street vids coming?

Love your voice and perspective
Thanks Maggie.
Well, THAT brought back some memories. It also made me think about my kids, working remotely without mentorship or oversight. What will they erase?
Really enjoyed this post. Big fan of your time running Men's Journal. Would love to read more about that time and your time at GQ. (I'm a mag nerd)

Nice! But tell me: where does this cash out, resume-wise? Should I delete the '90s? Or just import the '90s stuff into the '00s?
